Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition characterized by red, itchy, and flaky skin. It commonly appears in areas rich in oil glands, such as the scalp, face, upper chest, and back. Often mistaken for dandruff or psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis requires a proper diagnosis for effective treatment.

While the exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis isn’t fully understood, several contributing factors have been identified, including:

, as it often runs in families.

, which can worsen or trigger a flare-up.

           Ways to Treat Seborrheic Dermatitis:

Managing seborrheic dermatitis often involves both over-the-counter treatments and professional care from a dermatologist. Some treatment options include medicated shampoos, fragrance-free skin care products, prescription-strength topical creams, antifungal medications, and light therapy.

           When to See a Dermatologist:

If over-the-counter solutions fail to alleviate your symptoms or your condition worsens, it’s time to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a tailored treatment plan and monitor your progress to ensure optimal results.

While seborrheic dermatitis may not have a permanent cure, it is entirely manageable with consistent care. Follow these tips to reduce flare-ups and maintain healthier skin and scalp conditions:

Stick to a consistent skincare routine

, including gentle cleaning and moisturizing.

            Avoid harsh or irritating products

, as it can be a significant trigger for flare-ups.

            Schedule check-ins with your dermatologist

Your body is protected by your skin, which helps prevent damage to internal tissues and infection. However, the skin isn't impervious to disease and infection, and skin conditions are common at all stages of life. If you would like to learn more about your skin, check out these four skin diseases and conditions that are common in adults.

          1. Adult Acne

Acne is often associated with going through puberty, but even as an adult, you may struggle with acne. It's so common in adults that one study found that 85 percent of women and 15 percent of males have adult acne. Mild forms of adult acne usually present with blackheads, whiteheads, and small pustules. In severe cases, you may experience papules, deep cysts, and major irritation or redness.

There are many causes of adult acne, but some of the most common include hormones (menstruation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding), contact irritation, stress, and clogged pores. Treating adult acne depends on the type and severity, but many people do well with hydroxy, salicylic, and similar acids. Other treatments may include oral birth pills, antibiotics, retinol, sulfur, and blue light therapy.

          2. Cellulitis

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection that can be life-threatening if not treated. It can affect any part of your body but is more associated with the lower legs. Symptoms of cellulitis include swelling, redness, warmth, pain, and tenderness. There may also be red spotting, blisters, or skin dimpling. Some people also develop a fever. In severe cases, untreated cellulitis can reach the bloodstream and lymph nodes, causing widespread infection.

Cellulitis is usually caused by streptococcus and staphylococcus, which enter the skin via cuts. Risk factors include weakened immune system, skin conditions that break the skin, chromic swelling, and obesity. Luckily, treatment for cellulitis is usually as simple as a dose of antibiotics.

          3. Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis can occur if you come in contact with an irritant or an allergen. If the dermatitis is caused by an allergy, it may take a day or two for symptoms to appear. They include redness, itching, and dryness. In extreme cases, or if you come in contact with an irritant, you may also have swelling, burning, and tenderness. If you spot blistering, seek treatment immediately.

Common allergens that cause dermatitis include poison ivy, hair dyes, nickel, leather, latex, and fragrances. Treatment for contact dermatitis depends on the severity. For mild allergic reactions, a dose of antihistamine may help. But in more severe cases, a doctor may be recommended. Plus, even if the condition goes away on its own, a good dermatologist may be able to help prevent or reduce the risk of recurrence.

          4. Athlete's Foot

Athlete's foot is incredibly common, and a fungal infection can cause it. This leads to itching, stinging, and burning. The skin may also start to become scaly and flake off, especially between the toes. Plus, athlete's foot is highly contagious, so you can spread it to someone else or another part of your body, like your hand.

In most cases, athlete's foot will go away with over-the-counter creams, but the condition often returns if you don't fix the underlying issue. If your athlete's foot isn't going away on its own, you should seek medical treatment to determine if the condition has turned into something else. Similarly, if you have diabetes, medical attention is best to prevent additional infections and complications.

Your skin is an important part of your body, and besides looking great, you want it to be healthy. Unfortunately, like any part of your body, the skin can develop infections and disease. If you would like to learn more,

What Does a Skin Tag Look Like?

A skin tag usually consists of a soft, bulbous growth attached to the rest of the body by a stalk known as a peduncle. Skin tags may grow several centimeters in diameter, but they usually attain just a

in size. Some skin tags appear more elongated than bulbous in shape.

Most skin tags either assume the same coloration as the rest of your skin or appear slightly darker, although a skin tag that has lost its blood supply may turn black. They usually appear wherever the skin encounters frequent frictions, such as the armpits or groin. They may also develop on the neck or eyelids.

          Why Do Skin Tags Develop?

No one can say exactly why people get skin tags. Genetics would seem to play a role, since they tend to run in families. Hormonal changes in pregnancy may promote the development of skin tags. Obese individuals and individuals over 50 years of age often get them, although practically anyone can develop them.

Researchers have noticed an association between insulin resistance or triglyceride levels and skin tag risk. Studies indicate that sufferers from these issues have a higher risk of developing multiple skin tags. Diseases such as human papillomavirus (HPV) may also promote skin tag growth.

What Problems Can Skin Tags Create?

Fortunately, while skin tags qualify as a kind of tumor, they pose no threat of malignancy. If you can't tell whether you have a skin tag or some other abnormality, you should schedule an evaluation from your dermatologist. The findings will either set your mind at ease or allow you to get a more serious issue

          treated early.

Even benign growths, however, can cause trouble. For instance, a skin tag on the back of the neck may get snagged painfully in a necklace. A torn or irritated skin tag may bleed and/or itch annoyingly. Long skin tags on the edge of the eyelid could interfere with vision. You might simply not like the way they look.

How Do Dermatologists Remove Skin Tags?

If you want to rid yourself of a skin tag, resist the urge to do it yourself with the aid of an over-the-counter kit. When performed outside of a medical environment, this kind of procedure can easily lead to bleeding or infection. It also skips the all-important step of professional evaluation and diagnosis.

Dermatologists have multiple ways of removing skin tags. Excision, which involves simply cutting the skin tag off at its stalk, offers a quick, simple solution. To reduce the odds of infection, the dermatologist may prefer to use cauterization, which burns the skin tag away while also closing the wound.

Cryotherapy provides yet another option for skin tag removal. In this procedure, the dermatologist freezes the skin tag with super-cold liquid nitrogen. The cold kills the skin tag, which then falls off within about 10 days.

How Can You Reduce Your Chances of Developing Skin Tags?

You can't fight genetics or aging, both risk factors in skin tag development. However, you can work to control certain other risk factors. For example, if you suffer from obesity, safe weight-loss strategies can eliminate that risk factor. Treatment for diabetes or other contributing conditions may also help.

4 Simple Ways to Avoid Wrinkles Around the Eyes

Lines around the eyes are almost impossible to hide. Makeup can sometimes make them more noticeable, and sunglasses are not acceptable to wear everywhere. A more effective solution is to learn the little habits that cause the lines to begin or worsen existing wrinkles. Additionally, use these four inexpensive and easy ways to reduce the risk of crow's feet and fine lines.

          1. Eat Some Chocolate

Most people already know to wear sunblock and sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around the eyes from the UV rays of the sun. What these same people may not know is that dark chocolate may also help to protect against some damage from sunlight. Research reveals that the cocoa extract in dark chocolate helps protect against the damage from UV light.

Studies show that it takes only about an ounce of dark chocolate a day to help protect the skin from UV damage. The benefits apply to all the skin and not just the area around the eyes. However, this is useful information for anyone concerned about eye wrinkles since this sensitive area is often one of the first places where wrinkles appear.

          2. Use Gentle Motions

Foundation, eyeliner, eyeshadow, and other products around the eyes do not cause skin damage. How people apply the products could be the problem. The skin around the eyes is much thinner than the skin on the rest of the face, so that skin is easier to damage. Any time someone rubs or pulls the skin around the eyes, they risk wrinkles.

Try to apply all facial products to this area using fingers gently. Dab lotion and makeup into the skin. Choose liquid eyeliners or an easy-to-glide eye pencil to avoid any tension on the skin. Use makeup removers that dissolve and wipe away makeup rather than those that require an effort to remove.

          3. Control Allergies Better

Allergies that cause the eyes to itch, water, and become inflamed can lead to premature lines. Inflammation around the eyes causes the skin to stretch. Over time, the skin can remain stretched even after the inflammation goes away. The loose skin can develop into permanent wrinkles. Itchy eyes can also cause people to rub and scratch the skin and cause more damage.

Talk to a primary care physician about better allergy control, and ask an optometrist for eye drops for itchy eyes. If allergies strike, place a cool compress over the eyes to soothe the skin and reduce the risk of inflammation. Consider visiting an allergist if over-the-counter medications cannot keep allergic reactions under control.

          4. Try a Massage

Spas offer facial and eye massage therapies to help boost circulation and reduce puffiness. A massage to reduce chronic puffiness is also easy to do at home. Always remember to only tap around the eye and not to drag or pull the fingers across the skin.

Lightly tap with the index and middle fingers in a circular motion around the eyes. Press on the pressure points at the temples, under the eyebrow, and at the side of the nose near the brow. The movements can help to boost circulation and potentially reduce the fluid retention that causes bags under the eyes.

Some people discover that wrinkles still develop no matter how careful they are with their skincare routine. Age, genetics, and unavoidable illnesses can often undo all the hard work people contribute.

Do you have an itchy, red, and circular rash? While you might associate the shape with the bullseye rash of Lyme disease, the discolored spot may point to another issue - ringworm. If you're not sure what type of rash you have, take a look at these top ringworm questions.

          Is Ringworm a Worm?

Even though the name has the word in it, ringworm is not a worm. Unlike tapeworms, pinworms, and other parasites, ringworm is a fungal infection that affects the skin. While the name is somewhat misleading, it comes from the shape of the rash and not the cause of the skin condition. The rash has a characteristic ring shape with a raised worm-like border.

Ringworm can develop in different areas of the body. Tinea corporis is the medical term for general ringworm of the body. This may include the legs, arms, buttocks, or trunk or chest areas. Along with tinea corporis, ringworm infections also include tinea cruris (also known as jock itch), tinea pedis (athlete's foot), or tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp).

          How Do You Get Ringworm?

Again, this isn't a parasitic infection. This means a worm won't give you ringworm. Instead, people and some animals spread this fungal infection. Ringworm requires direct contact with the skin of the infected person or animal or direct contact with an object infected by a person or animal (such as towels, bed linens, or a pet's bed).

While less common, you can get ringworm from contaminated soil. This type of transmission requires prolonged contact with the soil.

          Can You Prevent Ringworm?

This fungal infection is highly contagious. An infected person or animal can pass it on before symptoms become noticeable. This makes prevention a challenge.

To reduce the risks of ringworm, stay away from infected people or animals. Close contact during some types of sports (such as wrestling) or the use of someone else's towel, bed linens, or personal care products such as combs and brushes can also spread the infection. Never share these items with a potentially infected person.

Moisture can also increase the spread of ringworm. If the weather is warm, you're active, or you sweat a lot, bathe and change your clothes regularly. While this won't completely eliminate the risk, a dry environment makes it harder for the fungus to grow or spread.

What Are the Symptoms of Ringworm?

Do you have ringworm? The telltale red or pink ring-shaped rash is the first sign of an infection. The inside area of the rash may look scaly or have red bumps. Even though the rash is round, the border is often irregular or wavy. If you don't have a perfect ring, you could still have ringworm.

A ringworm rash on the groin, soles of the feet, or palms of the hands may not have a circle shape. These rashes may still look red or pinkish and itch.

          How Should You Treat Ringworm?

Diagnosis is the first step towards treatment. If you suspect a ringworm infection, call the dermatologist for an exam. A round, raised, or red rash could indicate another type of infection (such as Lyme disease) or an allergic reaction.

If the dermatologist does diagnose you with ringworm, they'll prescribe or recommend an antifungal treatment. Over-the-counter antifungal creams can typically treat athlete's foot or jock itch effectively. These include ingredients such as clotrimazole, miconazole, terbinafine, and ketoconazole.

Severe ringworm infections and tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp) may require a prescription treatment. Instead of a topical treatment, the doctor may prescribe an oral antifungal medication.

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder. If you have lupus, your immune system targets your tissue and organs. Unfortunately, you may suffer from skin rashes as your immune system attacks your skin. In fact, skin problems occur in 66 percent of patients with lupus, as noted by the Lupus Foundation of America. Fortunately, a dermatologist can help you combat the skin issues that arise from this disorder.

As your immune system attacks your body, you may develop skin issues, such as the telltale sign of a butterfly-shaped rash on your face. This rash bears the resemblance of an open-winged butterfly across your cheeks. This particular rash covers the bridge of your nose in addition to your cheeks. However, not all individuals who have lupus have the butterfly rash.

In other cases, you may develop round lesions on your head and face. Sometimes, red, scaly patches appear. Other times, you may develop a rash that looks flat and resembles sunburn. Red, black, or purple spots can arise on your toes and fingers while small, red spots can occur on your legs. You can develop mouth or nose sores as well.

The sun has the potential to irritate your condition. You may develop ring-shaped lesions on parts of your body from sun exposure. Sometimes, current skin rashes worsen when you expose them to the sun. The sun exasperates skin issues in 40 to 70 percent of patients, according to the Lupus Foundation of America.

           Process of Diagnosing Lupus

The first practitioner you usually see if you suspect you have lupus is your primary care physician. They can perform an initial evaluation and guide you through the rest of the process for diagnosing lupus. Typically, your primary care physician refers you to a rheumatologist if they suspect that you have lupus. This specialist focuses on the muscles and joints and can determine if your symptoms arose from lupus.

Although a rheumatologist assists with the management of your condition, this doctor may recommend other specialists to address issues related to other parts of your body. For instance, they may refer you to a dermatologist if you have skin issues as a result of lupus.

Diagnosis and Treatment From a Dermatologist

Once you receive a referral to a dermatologist, you can figure out if your skin issues have a connection with your lupus.

           Diagnosing Lupus Lesions and Rashes

A dermatologist evaluates your skin visually. The practitioner conducts a visual analysis of any rashes or lesions you have. Your specialist evaluates the inside of your mouth and nose for sores. Your dermatologist also asks you to fill out a medical history report and asks you about any medications you take.

After the visual examination and medical history analysis, your dermatologist may use a microscope to further examine the rash or lesions. This process is known as a biopsy and consists of your practitioner taking a small tissue sample of the affected area for examination.

           Treating Lupus-Related Skin Problems

Some possible courses of action a dermatologist takes to help you control your lupus-related skin problems include patient education, lifestyle changes, and medications. From your doctor, you may learn how to properly manage your skin problems through lifestyle changes and at-home remedies.

Examples of possible medications a dermatologist prescribes to lupus patients include:

             Corticosteroids

            Anti-malaria drugs

            Immunosuppressants

            Steroid-sparing medications

Lupus commonly attacks the skin of individuals it affects. As skin issues emerge, you may feel selfconscious. You don't have to, though, since a dermatologist can reduce your skin-related lupus symptoms through medications and at-home care.

Does handwashing dry out your skin? If your hands are uncomfortable or cracked, take a look at what you need to know about this dermatological dilemma.

Do You Really Need to Wash Your Hands?

Your skin is dry, cracked, and red. Even though the dermal discomfort makes you want to stop washing, this isn't a healthy idea. While hot water and soap can dry hands, washing serves a serious purpose. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), handwashing is one of the top ways to avoid viral, bacterial, and other illnesses.

If handwashing-related dryness causes significant discomfort, irritation, or cracking/bleeding, you still need to continue this practice. But you can take steps to reduce the effects of dry skin.

Is the Dry Skin From Handwashing?

Before you assume the dry skin is from excessive handwashing, make sure you don't another underlying issue. In most cases, the more you wash your hands, the drier they become. But some patients may have other issues, such as eczema or allergies, that aggravate this issue. If you also experience redness, irritation, or flaking under other circumstances, talk to your dermatologist about additional causes.

How Can You Treat Dry Hands?

You can hydrate your hands and avoid the issues washing creates. Provided the dermatologist hasn't diagnosed you with an underlying skin condition (again, such as eczema or an allergy), you can reduce the effects with a moisturizing routine.

Over-the-counter creams and lotions can add moisture and soften your hands and treat mild dryness. Ask your dermatologist to recommend a moisturizer that will work best for your individual needs.

If your hands are extremely dry, the dermatologist may recommend a stronger moisturizing product or an ointment to stop cracking and peeling. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), products with lactic acid and urea can help the skin to hold in water. Even though these products may help to heal your dry hands, they can irritate cracked skin or eczema-related rashes.

Along with over-the-counter moisturizers, the dermatologist may prescribe a corticosteroid or an immune modulator medication. Not only can these topical medications soothe the skin, but they can also relieve itching, swelling, or redness caused by excessive handwashing.

           Can You Prevent Dry Hands?

While you shouldn't stop washing your hands, you can reduce the effects of water and soap products. To decrease the likelihood of dryness, turn down the heat. You don't need to wash your hands in scalding water to stop the spread of disease. The CDC recommends washing with warm or cold running water.

Your soap choice can also affect the severity of dryness. A harsh cleanser can dry your skin, irritate it, or aggravate existing dermatological issues. The dermatologist can help you to choose a non-drying or moisturizing cleansing product.

After you wash your hands, blot them dry. Even though this won't prevent dryness, it can reduce abrasions or irritation. If your hands aren't dry or you don't see visible damage, you can still protect your skin with moisturizer. Not only can a moisturizer product hydrate your hands, but it also acts as a protective barrier to future dryness.

What Can You Do If the Dryness Doesn't Disappear?

You wash carefully with cool or warm water and a moisturizing cleanser. You blot your hands dry and you slather on a coat of cream. But your hands are still rough, dry, cracked, and chapped. What can you do? If you haven't already visited the dermatologist, the doctor is the first place to start. The doctor can evaluate your dryness issue and suggest a treatment plan.

Large Pores? How to Address the Problem

of your pores, you can make them less visible and make your skin brighter and smoother. Take a look at what causes large pores and how to deal with this skin issue.

           What Causes Large Skin Pores?

Larger skin pores are mainly caused by genetics. So if you have family members with large pores, then you may just have inherited this type of skin. And as you age, your skin begins to lose its elasticity, which can make pores look bigger.

Men tend to have larger pores than women, but hormonal changes, like pregnancy, can certainly increase the appearance of large pores in women.

People with naturally oily skin can have larger pore sizes. In fact, people with oily skin may have larger pores because of sebaceous filaments (sebum plugs). Not to be confused with blackheads, sebaceous filaments are natural oils that lubricate the skin. However, when sebum, dead skin, and bacteria mix, they can create clogged pores that may look larger than normal.

Lastly, too much sun exposure can cause your pores to look larger. Sun damage can reduce your skin's water, collagen, and elastin levels and can stretch the edges of your pores.

How Can You Treat Large Pores?

Once you narrow down the cause of your large pores, you know what actually needs to be treated. Here are just a few treatments to try.

Treating Large Pores Caused by Sun Damage

If your large pores are caused by sun damage, start wearing sunscreen and a hat when you are outside. A great way to treat skin that has suffered from sun damage is with retinoids-forms of Vitamin A. Retinoid creams can reduce the appearance of large pores as well as reduce dark spots and fine lines from sun damage.

Besides retinoids, try finding skin creams that contain ingredients like coffeeberry extract, green tea, or Vitamin C. These antioxidants will protect your skin's elastin and collagen from sun damage, thus improving the appearance of your pores.

Treating Large Pores Caused by Oily Skin

You may be tempted to squeeze pores that have sebaceous filaments since they may appear larger; however, try not to squeeze your skin since this can lead to scarring.

Try to find topical medications with like retinoids, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid. These chemicals are great at breaking down and dissolving sebum plugs.

Some people are tempted to dry out their skin too much, which can result in the skin overproducing oil in response, so talk with your dermatologist to develop a proper regimen.

Treating Large Pores Caused by Genetics, Age, and Other Factors

If your large pores aren't easily controlled by protecting your skin from sun damage or from excess oil, you may want to visit a dermatologist.

He or she may recommend in-office treatments, like a glycolic gel peel. Formulated skin peels penetrate deeper skin layers and remove dead skins, which minimizes the appearance of large pores.

Your dermatologist may also set you up with a specialized skincare regimen. For instance, your doctor could prescribe Glytone skincare products. Skincare products that are prescribed by your dermatologist can exfoliate your skin, neutralize surface oil, eliminate bacteria, and refine your skin texture.

Some of these products contain ingredients like glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide so they can treat acne as well as minimize your pore size.

. While some types of skin cancer can be treated effectively, other types, particularly melanoma, can often be fatal. Take steps to prevent skin cancer and reduce your risk.

           Sun Exposure

Sun damage is the main preventable cause of most skin cancers. You should limit your exposure to reduce your risk. UV radiation is at its highest during the sunniest parts of the day, from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If you can, stay out of direct sunlight during these hours whenever possible, especially during the late spring and summer months when the sun is at its most intense.

Seek shade often when you have to be outside for a long time. Wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves, pants, and wide-brimmed hats. Put gloves on when you garden or do yard work to protect your hands.

           Sunscreen

Wear sunscreen on any exposed skin daily. Apply sunscreen even when the weather is overcast and when you'll be inside most of the day. Some UV rays can penetrate clouds and window glass, so your skin can still be damaged even when you're not outside in direct sunlight.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Choose one with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

Your sunscreen is only as good as your application, and many people don't use enough sunscreen to get the advertised protection. Use at least a nickel-sized squirt of sunscreen on your face and ears alone.

If you wear a moisturizer or makeup with SPF, consider it extra protection. You should still apply a dedicated sunscreen under your other skincare and makeup products because you may not apply enough face lotion or makeup to get the advertised protection.

Apply about two tablespoons of sunscreen to your body - about as much sunscreen as it would take to fill a standard shot glass.

Apply your sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you'll be exposed to the sun to maximize your protection. You should reapply your sunscreen at least once every two hours when you're in the sun.

           Eye Protection

Even your eyes need protection from the sun. Choose a pair of sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays with lenses large enough to cover your entire eye area. Consider wrap-around styles for extra protection for the edges of your eyes, especially if you spend a lot of time outside in the sun during the midday hours.

           Indoor Tanning

Though many indoor tanning beds and booths claim to be safer than the sun, they still use UV light, which emits radiation and can damage your skin cells. Avoid any indoor tanning devices that use UV rays to tan the skin.

Choose a tanning spray or lotion if you want to darken your skin tone without increasing your risk of UV damage and skin cancer.

           Detection

Many types of skin cancer are treatable, especially if they're detected early. Examine your skin for changes at least once a month and make an annual appointment with your dermatologist for a full skin check.

Monitor your skin for moles, sores, or any new growth on your skin - a dermatologist should examine any of these changes.

Look for moles that have potential signs of melanoma. You can remember the signs by remembering A-B-C-D-E.

A is for asymmetrical. If your mole or sore doesn't look the same on both sides, you should see your dermatologist.

B is for border. Many melanomas have jagged or irregular borders rather than a smooth outline.

C is for color. Check for uneven coloring or spots of discoloration.

D is for diameter. Any mole that is larger than the size of a small pea should be checked by a doctor.

Questions to Ask If You Suffer

         From Seasonal Dry Skin

As the seasons change and the weather cools, your skin goes from soft and smooth to dry and flaky. What can you do to combat seasonal dryness? If dry skin is an issue, take a look at the questions to ask before hydration becomes an even bigger dermatological dilemma.

What Makes Your Skin Dry, Itchy, or Flaky?

Hot baths, dehydration, beauty or hygiene products, cold wind during outdoor activities, and hot air from forced-air systems can cause dry skin. Before you can solve your moisture issue, you need to understand the root cause.

In some cases, a diagnosable dermatological condition, such as eczema, may masquerade as common cracked skin. While you can have both at the same time, if your dry skin is something more, your dermatologist needs to examine the issue and create a treatment plan.

If you're not sure what makes your skin dry out (or what makes it worse), keep a journal to detail possible causes. Include cosmetic and hygiene products you use, outdoor activities you participate in, and medications you take. Also note your bathing routine and how often you are exposed to forced-air heat.

            Have You Tried an Exfoliator?

While much of the dead, dry skin will slough off on its own, an exfoliator can speed the process. If you dream of smooth skin, exfoliation (the removal of the outer layer of dead skin through physical or chemical means) can help.

To exfoliate dry skin, start with a gentle product made for sensitive skin - especially if you have acne or red or itchy skin. A dye- and fragrance-free exfoliating scrub can gently lift the skin and smooth the area. If you're still dry, an exfoliating mitt or loofah can help.

Extreme dryness may require a professional's help. The dermatologist can recommend a product or try a chemical treatment in the office. These are typically stronger options that may also increase sensitivity or redness. If you already have sensitive skin, tell the doctor before making any decisions.

            Do You Use a Moisturizer?

Even though exfoliating can remove dead, dry skin, it won't completely cure the problem. Provided you don't have another diagnosable dermatological condition, you may only need a moisturizer to stop the drying.

If you don't already use a moisturizer, now is the time to start. A gentle, dye- and fragrance-free product can add the moisture your skin craves without causing redness or irritation. Your dermatologist can help you to find a brand that meets your skin's needs - such as an oil-free moisturizer for acne-prone skin or a heavier cream for extreme drying.

Do You Use the Right Amount of Moisturizer?

A thin slick of lotion may not do the trick to tame your dry skin. If you slather on lotion or cream and still experience dry skin, you may need more moisturizer. There's no magic number when it comes to moisturizer quantities. Start small and add more if your skin doesn't respond.

Do You Need a Heavier Cream?

Light lotions can solve minor dry skin problems. But these products may not help to heal your skin. A heavier cream with ingredients such as mineral oil, lanolin, shea butter, or jojoba oil may help.

Are You Allergic to Your Moisture Product?

Some moisturizers contain irritating ingredients, such as dyes, perfumes, or preservatives. While these lotions add moisture, the irritation may make the dryness and flaking worse. The same goes for products you're allergic to. If the dryness worsens after you start a new moisturizing routine, consider the possibility you're allergic to an ingredient in the product.

A dermatologist can help you to explore ingredients and find products that heal your skin - minus a reaction.

What You Can Do About Senior Portrait Day Pimples

You wake up the morning of senior picture day and you have a pimple. What should you do? Before you pop, take a look at what you need to know about the quick fixes and other options for your acne issue.

            Do Reduce Swelling and Redness

Noticeable swelling and redness are the primary pimple problems when it comes to your pictures. You don't want a balloon-like zit front and center in this memory-making photo. Luckily you can reduce some (but not all) of the swelling and redness at home.

           To stop the swell:

Apply ice. You already know to ice your ankle after an injury. This reduces swelling to the area. The same goes for your pimple. Make sure to wrap the ice in a cloth first to avoid a painful facial freeze.

Use salicylic acid. These over the counter products (typically gels or creams) can reduce swelling and redness. Use caution with these products. Some patients experience increased redness or strong irritation. This is not something to use for the first time on picture day.

Contact the dermatologist. If you have a larger breakout, excessive redness, or bothersome swelling, the doctor may have additional treatments to help.

While methods such as ice or salicylic acid can help, other so-called treatments can do more harm than good. Read on for what not to do next.

           Don't Pick or Pop

If you think picking or popping your pimple will instantly remove it, think again. Why shouldn't you try these tactics? They won't help you to avoid a pimple in your picture and can:

Increase redness. If you pick at or pop your pimple it can cause redness - even if you didn't notice this symptom before.

Cause infection. Aside from aesthetic issues, picking or popping can lead to an infection. This can also increase redness and swelling. If you picked or popped and now your pimple is painful, severely swollen, has pus or other foul drainage, contact your dermatologist.

Increase the chance of scarring. The more you pick and pop the greater the chances are that the area will scar after the pimple recedes.

What should you do if ice doesn't work, salicylic acid isn't an option, and you can't pick or pop? If your pimple is in the way of your perfect picture, you still have alternatives.

           Do Carefully Cover

Instant removal isn't an option when it comes to pimples. When reduction techniques don't work, and you don't want to spend extra for photo retouching, you can carefully cover your breakout. If you choose to cover your pimples:

Start with a clean face. Gently cleanse your face first. Blot or pat your face dry. Harsh rubbing will intensify redness and can cause pimples to burst. This opens you up to irritation or infection.

Use an oil-free moisturizer. You may be tempted to skip the moisture when you have breakouts. While a greasy lotion can add to the pimple problem, your face still needs hydration. Even out your skin with a fragrance-, dye-, and oil-free product.

Choose oil-free cosmetics. Use cover-up, foundation, or other cosmetic products that are non-comedogenic and oil-free.

Avoid over-application. Several layers of cover-up, foundation, and powder can look crusty or cause more breakouts. Wash the area (again, gently) after the photo shoot to remove unnecessary potentially pore-clogging makeup.

           Don't Forget about the Dermatologist

Is this a one-time stress breakout or do you get more than a few pimples often? If your skin issues extend beyond picture day, you may have acne. This is a more serious condition than the typical teenage pimple. Your doctor can evaluate the breakouts and recommend a prescription treatment. This may include topical creams, antibiotics, or other oral medications.

Get a Safe Summer Glow With These 7 Skincare Tips

Whether you plan to spend every free moment outdoors, at parties, or on vacation with your friends or family, you want to have that quintessential summer glow while making sure your skin is still healthy. Below, we've listed a few summer skincare tips to help you keep your skin clear and have it radiate all season long.

           1. Moisturize With SPF Frequently

Your skin tends to dry out more in the summer, especially if you move between the air-conditioned indoors and the hot and humid outdoors. Apply a lightweight moisturizer several times throughout the day to prevent dry patches from forming on your skin.

Take that protection a step further and use a moisturizer with built-in, broad spectrum SPF. You'll reduce your chances for sunburns and associated skin damage by applying this kind of moisturizer frequently. Try moisturizers with built-in broad spectrum SPF and that have a breakout-free formula to protect your skin from UV rays and to keep it clear.

           2. Exfoliate Your Skin

Summer is the perfect time to explore the outdoors, relax on the beach, or swim in the pool. It's also the perfect time for dead skin to shed or for oil to build up in your pores. Remove older layers of skin or patches of oil — and keep your face looking clear and fresh — by exfoliating weekly. Opt for a gentle exfoliating cleanser or an exfoliating pad so you can easily scrub your skin at home.

           3. Adjust Your Skincare Products

Summer weather requires summer skin products. As mentioned above, you'll want to use a lightweight moisturizer during the summer. You should also switch to a foaming face wash. Using a foaming face wash allows the product to absorb more quickly into the skin, letting you see clearer, more hydrated skin faster.

           4. Drink More Water

Make sure to stay hydrated throughout the summer. Even if you apply moisturizer every hour during the day, your skin will still dry out if you're dehydrated. Aim to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water daily to stay hydrated and to flush toxins out of your body that could cause breakouts or other skin issues.

           5. Protect Easily Forgotten Body Parts

Pay attention to other areas of your body that could get damaged from sun or heat exposure: your lips, scalp, and eyes. Apply lip balm to your mouth (remember that SPF!) and a spray sunscreen to your scalp regularly. You should also wear a hat and sunglasses for additional protection when you're outside.

           6. Refresh Your Skin Naturally

If your skin does get damaged during the summer, you can use a few natural, at-home remedies to soothe sunburns or inflammation. Drinking tomato juice, for example, can remove the sting from sunburns. You can also freeze tomato juice in small cubes and rub the frozen blocks over your skin if you don't like the taste of this red fruit. Just let the juice dry completely on your skin before removing it.

Additionally, you can increase your vitamin C intake. Vitamin C helps protect your skin from the UV rays your sunscreen can't block out.

           7. Create a Custom Care Routine With Your Dermatologist

Make an appointment with your dermatologist to create a custom skincare routine. Your dermatologist can recommend which cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreens to use, and they'll give you a few other tips on how to care for your skin during the summer season.

Use the tips above to keep your skin clear and healthy all summer long. And if you need to get treatment for skin blemishes at any point,

         Tips for Managing Blemishes Safely

People commonly pick or squeeze a blemish, even though this habit can lead to problems like redness and infection. However, people often continue their futile removal techniques despite the potential for scars or more obvious blemishes. Sometimes, the spots they attack are not even pimples. Here are some tips for skin-safe ways to address your unsightly blemishes.

            Manage Clogged Pores

Pores can look larger as they fill with oil or makeup. Enlargement also occurs due to sun damage and age-related loss of elasticity. You have large pores that are clogged with debris, the solution is to clean them out, not squeeze them.

People that pick and squeeze at blackheads could cause more bacteria to enter the pore and this could cause even more enlargement. A better option is to cleanse the skin with charcoal masks, cleansers with salicylic acid, and commercial exfoliants. Salicylic acid works effectively for oily skin but can dry out other skin types, so use these products cautiously.

Visit a professional for persistent blackheads that continue to appear despite proper cleansing. A dermatologist can extract the blackheads properly without any damage to the surrounding skin. The doctor can also suggest effective products for your skin type that will cleanse the skin adequately without excess dryness.

            Address Acne Spots

When you see a large pimple, you might struggle to not squeeze it into oblivion. However, squeezed pimples could cause bacteria to go deep into the skin and lead to cystic acne. A squeeze may also push bacteria into a nearby pore and create another pimple or leave a scar. If the blemish has turned into a pustule or a whitehead, you can drain it without squeezing it.

Clean and dry your hands and wash your entire face with an antibacterial cleanser. Apply a mud mask to the blemish and allow it to dry. Make a compress with hot water and a washcloth and press it against the pimple. Rinse and rewarm the cloth and place it back on the face to draw the pus to the surface. Wipe the cloth over the softened pimple until the top drains.

One of the best reasons to resist the desire to pick is the risk of a staph infection. The risk is heightened in the section from the corners of the mouth and over the nose known as the danger triangle because it can lead to serious brain or sinus infections.

In fact, keep the hands away from the face entirely except for hygiene purposes. People often transfer bacteria, oils, and dirt from their hands to their faces. Blemishes appear when the debris from their hands enters a pore on the face.

            Check Out Bumps

Another reason to not pick is that the bump may not actually be a pimple. Many bumps and spots appear on the skin other than just blemishes, like milia. Milia are small keratin-filled cysts that mimic whitehead pimples. Acne that appears along with flushed face may be rosacea. Ingrown hair, folliculitis, rashes, and skin cancers can all look and feel like pimples at times.

A delay in treatment can cause a skin problem to spread or become more serious. Schedule a skin check for any blemish that looks unusual or grows differently than normal acne bumps or blackheads. Solutions for most skin problems are available from dermatologists and clear up quickly with the right product.

Healthy skin is in. Whether you're young or not, you can have soft, smooth, and above all, healthy skin with minimal effort. If you want to brush up on your skin care routine, take a look at the do's and don'ts to follow.

            Do Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a year-round requirement for healthy skin. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends using a broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 30. While the sun's rays are the most powerful between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., any daylight exposure can damage your skin — during all seasons.

Not only can excessive, unprotected sun exposure cause serious types of cancer (such as melanoma), but it can also result in premature aging. Reducing the effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can limit these risks, giving you a true healthy glow.

            Don't UV Tan

A golden glow may give the appearance of health. But a suntan or a tanning bed tan is far from good for your skin. According to the AAD, tanning beds are responsible for more than 400,000 cases on skin cancer annually. Tanning bed use before age 35 increases melanoma risk by as much as 59 percent.

Even though melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, it isn't the only potential effect of tanning beds. The AAD notes that a single indoor tanning session can raise the likelihood of developing squamous cell carcinoma by as much as 67 percent. It can also up the odds of a basal cell carcinoma diagnosis by nearly 30 percent.

Along with increasing the skin cancer risk, tanning — whether outdoors in the sun or indoors in tanning beds — can cause premature wrinkling or a leather-like look to the skin.

            Do Spray Tan

If you want a glow similar to what the sun (or a tanning bed) provides, sunless tanning is a safer option. Spray tans, sunless tanning creams, and other similar products darken the skin without the danger of UV rays.

While sunless tanning is a healthier alternative to baking in the UV light, the faux glow won't protect your skin against the sun. You will still need to wear sunscreen over your sunless tan during daylight outdoor activities.

            Don't Smoke

Smoking is a known cancer-causer that can cause a host of health problems. When it comes to your skin, smoking can cause body-wide wrinkles and may even lead to uncomfortable dermatological conditions. Some evidence also suggests that tobacco use can increase the risk of developing systemic lupus erythematosus, hidradenitis suppurativa, and psoriasis.

            Do Visit the Dermatologist

Regular visits to the dermatologist can increase the likelihood of early skin cancer identification. The dermatologist can also diagnose other skin conditions, remove suspicious lesions, and provide the best skin care products for your needs.

            Don't Try the Latest Fad

Skin care fads come and go. You're an individual and your skin has individual needs. The latest, so-called greatest beauty cleansers, exfoliators, lotions, and creams may work for some people — but may not work for you.

During your dermatologist visit, ask the doctor what types of products are best for skin type. This is especially important if you have a dermatological condition that requires targeted care, such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea.

            Do Wash Well

Healthy skin is clean skin. By the end of the day, pollution, bacteria, and other debris take their toll on your face. Ask the dermatologist to suggest a mild cleanser that will erase the day, giving you the healthy complexion that you deserve.

5 Factors That Could Negatively Affect Your Skin

You may be inclined to believe skin issues affect adolescents and the elderly, but problems with the skin can affect individuals of any age. Regardless of your age, you should consider how your lifestyle and environment may influence the condition of your skin. Here are five factors that may be affecting your skin, and how you might counteract the negative.

            1. Wintertime Weather

Cold winter weather often causes dry skin for many. You may notice that your lips feel chapped or your skin becomes flaky and itchy during the winter. Exposure to the biting wind often drains moisture from your skin, and this may aggravate existing skin conditions such as psoriasis. When venturing outdoors on a cold and windy day, do your best to cover up so your skin is not exposed.

Remember to stay hydrated during the winter by drinking plenty of water. Using a moisturizer on your face and body may help as well. Be sure to use a product that is dermatologist tested.

Although you may be tempted to warm yourself by taking a hot shower on a cold winter day, use warm water instead. Hot showers or baths may dry and irritate your skin even further.

            2. Exposure to Dust and Pollutants

If you work in a dusty environment, your skin may be taking a direct hit. Exposure to dust, pollutants, and chemicals may clog the pores and make your skin appear dull. Pollutants may also cause acne flare-ups. The best way to counteract environmental effects on the skin is through a smart skin care regimen.

Cleanse your face morning and night to remove dirt and grime. Remember to use lukewarm water instead of hot. Forgetting to cleanse your skin at the end of the day may result in clogged pores and blackheads, so be diligent about your skin care routine.

            3. Poor Diet

A poor diet is not healthy in any regard, and your food choices may be affecting your skin. Your skin needs healthy fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants to fight free radicals that may age your skin. Additionally, too many sweets and carbohydrates may contribute to acne, so limit these in your diet.

Consider adding cashews as well as berries to your diet. Some nuts and berries are rich in zinc and may help reduce inflammation. Also, cut back on caffeine and sodium in your diet, as both can increase your risk for breakouts.

            4. Lack of Sleep

If you are sleep deprived, you may notice your skin appears dull or is more prone to acne flare-ups. Lack of sleep may cause your body to produce high levels of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone, and at high levels, the body and skin are prone to inflammation.

You may notice that being sleep deprived also tends to cause dark circles under your eyes. The dark appearance is caused by dilated blood vessels that often occur when you don't sleep enough. Do your skin a great favor and get adequate sleep each night.

            5. Hormonal Changes

Your skin often responds to hormonal changes and fluctuations. Females may notice acne breakouts during their menstrual cycle. Dry skin may be more likely as you age and approach menopause. During various stages of your life, hormonal changes may contribute to skin issues.

Remember to be proactive in your skin care routine. Cleansing, moisturizing, and eating a healthy diet may help keep your skin balanced during hormonal changes.

           See your

2 Simple Skincare Changes You Should Make This Winter

Since warm air holds more moisture than cool air, a change in the seasons could be enough to spark a long list of troubling skin issues. From dry, cracked hands to surprise problems with acne, winter weather can make preparing for that Christmas picture even more stressful. Here are two simple skincare changes you should make this winter and why.

           1. Use a Humidifier

When humidity levels indoors drop, your skin suffers. In addition to causing tightness, redness, and itching, dry skin can also contribute to issues like fine lines, flaking, and an ashy appearance. In extreme cases, skin can even become dry enough that it cracks and bleeds, especially in frequently washed and exposed places like your hands.

Indoor heaters leach even more moisture from your indoor air, causing problems like static buildup, nosebleeds, and sinus discomfort. Fortunately, using a humidifier is an easy way to solve all of these issues.

Modern cool-mist humidifiers work by using an internal wick to absorb water and disperse the moisture in front of a fan. As the system runs, the humidity levels in the room improve, helping the skin to stay hydrated and comfortable.

To keep your skin healthy and comfortable, experts recommend keeping humidity levels in your home between 30% and 50%. If you have dry skin and are concerned about keeping moisture levels in your home on point, you can even purchase a hygrometer, which measures indoor humidity.

In addition to helping your skin, nails, and hair to stay supple, humidifiers also soothe dry throats, calm irritated eyes, and prevent bloody noses and sinus headaches. Additionally,

           new research

has shown that since bacteria and viruses don't replicate as well when humidity levels are high, running a humidifier in your home could help you to ward off winter illnesses like the flu.

           2. Boost Your Exfoliation Routine

During the winter, your skin has to work exceptionally hard to regenerate itself, which can cause another problem: too many dead skin cells. As the skin creates new, healthy cells to replace cells damaged by cold winter air and UV light, the surface of the skin can become uneven, and pores can become clogged, leading to breakouts.

However, by using an exfoliator, you can remove dead skin, revealing bright, smooth, healthy skin just under the surface.

Exfoliators come in two varieties: physical exfoliators and chemical exfoliators. While physical exfoliants contain scrubbing particles made from materials like crushed walnut shells or baking soda, chemical exfoliants work by loosening the bond between dead skin cells and the surrounding tissue.

To keep your skin healthy and clear all winter long, find an exfoliant designed for your skin type, and use it one to three times a week. Talk with your dermatologist about which products are right for you, since people with skin sensitivity issues or certain varieties of acne can irritate their skin by exfoliating too often or too harshly.

When you exfoliate, focus on being as gentle as possible, and always abide by the recommendations given by the manufacturer and your doctor. For instance, since chemical exfoliators need to be completely absorbed before moving on, applying your night cream too soon after application could interfere with your final results.

Managing wintertime skin isn't always easy, which is why working with a team of skincare professionals can be so helpful.

5 Do's and Don'ts to Treat Dry, Itchy Skin

Dry, itchy skin may be caused by several factors, including skin allergies or medical conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. If you suffer from irritated, itchy skin, then consulting with your physician or dermatologist is probably a good idea. A dermatologist specializes in treating all types of skin conditions. In the meantime, use the following tips to treat your itchy skin.

           1. DO Get an Evaluation and Professional Opinion

If your itchy skin has gone on for an extended period of time and does not respond to home remedies or over-the-counter treatments, then it is especially important to seek the advice of a dermatologist. The doctor will evaluate your case and condition to help pinpoint the exact cause.

A skin allergy, such as a localized reaction to a soap or lotion, may clear up on its own after you stop using the product. However, if your skin is red or blistering, or you develop welts or hives, then the doctor may prescribe a medication. In more severe cases, medications may include antihistamines or topical hydrocortisone creams to reduce the inflammation. Once the inflammation is gone, your itchy skin should begin to heal.

Alternatively, if your itch is caused by a skin condition, then you may require a different course of action and treatment plan. Your dermatologist will recommend a treatment that is most suitable for the condition you have.

           2. DON'T Take Long, Hot Showers or Baths

Whatever the cause of your itch and irritation is, you should try to avoid bathing or showering in hot water. Lukewarm showers are best, as this temperature is less likely to rob your skin of moisture. You should also avoid soaking in a hot tub for a long period of time, as this may dry out your skin and make you itch even more.

           3. DO Apply Some Natural Aloe Vera on Your Itchy Skin

You may have heard about the natural healing powers of aloe. In fact, aloe is said to reduce inflammation, and it is a cooling agent. Additionally, aloe is a natural moisturizer. Generally, aloe is a well-tolerated topical treatment, and you may use it a few times a day.

You may cut a leaf from an aloe plant and apply the soothing gel onto the affected area. Or, you can purchase aloe at the pharmacy in gel form. Be sure the store-bought aloe gel is natural and organic without additives.

           4. DON'T Use Harsh Cleansers and Cosmetics

Read the labels before you purchase skin cleansers and cosmetics. Some products may contain harsh chemicals which may make your itchy, dry skin worse. Try to use products that have been approved by dermatologists or those that are dermatology-tested. Fragrances and scented detergents may also irritate your skin, so avoid these as well.

          5. DO Raise the Humidity in Your Home

Do you live in a very dry climate? If so, then you need to check on your humidity levels at home. To do so, purchase a hygrometer. This instrument measures the level of humidity in your home. An ideal humidity level is between 30 and 50 percent.

If you need to add moisture in your home, try using a humidifier. Using a humidifier may improve your dry skin. Keep in mind, you need to keep your humidifier clean and disinfected to avoid the growth of mold and bacteria.

Remember, you can take several measures to relieve dry and itchy skin, such as using natural skin moisturizers. If none of these methods improve your condition, or you develop a rash that does not heal or looks infected, then see your

Skin cancer is by far the most common type of cancer in the U.S. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetimes. Skin cancer comes in different types, with melanoma and non-melanoma being the main two categories.

Non-melanoma skin cancers affect over 3 million Americans each year, while melanoma impacts over 1 million Americans. The good news is that with early detection, both non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers are highly treatable and curable.

However, without early detection, melanoma can be deadly. According to the American Cancer Society, the survival rate when melanoma is detected early is 99 percent. It falls to 63 percent when the cancer reaches the lymph nodes and 20 percent when the cancer metastasizes into the organs.

Here is what you need to know about this potentially deadly form of skin cancer.

           Risk Factors

While melanoma can occur in almost anyone, a few things can increase your risk of developing this form of skin cancer. Here are a few risk factors to be aware of:

Exposure to UV light. One major risk factor for melanoma is regular exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV rays come from both sunlight and the light produced by tanning beds and damage your skin cell's DNA. Reducing your exposure to harmful UV rays can reduce your skin cancer risk.

A history of sunburns. Even if you are not exposed to UV rays on a regular basis, just a few sunburns can increase your chances of getting melanoma.

Family history. Having a close relative who has dealt with melanoma may also mean that you are at an increased risk of developing it as well.

Hair and skin color. While melanoma can occur in anyone regardless of skin and hair color, those will fair skin, green or blue eyes, red or blonde hair, or skin that freckles easily are at an increased risk.

Age. Your age is another factor that can impact your risk of melanoma. As your age increases, so do your chances of developing melanoma. The older you are, the more exposure you have had to UV rays.

Being aware of these risk factors and taking precautions is key.

           Tell-Tale Signs

You should also know the signs of melanoma. When it comes to moles, the American Cancer Society suggests the very helpful ABCDE rule. In moles you want to look for these attributes that may signal melanoma:

Asymmetry. If one side of the mole does not match the other, it's asymmetrical and may be a sign of melanoma.

Border. An irregular border that is jagged or blurred may also be a sign of melanoma.

Color. Non-uniform coloration of your moles may also be a warning sign.

Diameter. Size is also important. Moles larger 6 millimeters across can be a sign of melanoma.

Evolving. Another potential sign of melanoma is if your moles experience changes in terms of size, shape, or color.

Other signs that you need to pay attention to that may indicate melanoma include sores that will not heal, redness and swelling of the skin, and itchiness or pain.

           Prevention and Diagnosis

When it comes to melanoma, prevention is key. Dermatologists recommend avoiding direct sunlight, wearing sunscreen, and taking other protective measures when outside, as well as avoiding tanning beds and sunlamps. Regular self-screenings are also essential. If you notice any changes to your moles or your skin, a visit to the dermatologist is a must.

In order to diagnose melanoma, your dermatologist will first perform a visual exam followed by a biopsy of any suspicious areas. If melanoma is present, a doctor can treat it through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy depending on your needs.

When left untreated, melanoma can be deadly, which is why you need to see your dermatologist as soon as possible if you notice any changes in your skin. If you have any concerns or have noticed any signs that may point to melanoma,

If you've always been careful to use sunscreen, avoid cigarette smoke-filled rooms and drink plenty of water, you may be dismayed to discover the sudden appearance of fine lines and facial wrinkles in your twenties or thirties. Dealing with wrinkles before you've even left your teenage acne in the rearview mirror can seem unfair, and those dealing with unwanted facial lines can find themselves dropping big bucks on department-store facial masks and treatments designed to slow the aging process.

These treatments can sometimes help, but the secret to obtaining seemingly ageless skin often lies in getting down to the root cause of your fine lines. By identifying the issues that are preventing you from getting the smooth skin you'd like, you'll be able to unwind the aging process and start with a fresh face again. Read on to learn more about your options, both non-medical and medical, to stop fine lines and wrinkles in their tracks.

Look at Dietary and Environmental Factors

In most cases, a sudden uptick in wrinkles can be purely cosmetic and therefore easily reversible. If you've been drinking more alcohol (or coffee) than water lately or have switched to an especially sodiumheavy diet, your wrinkles may be the result of dehydration. When your body is in greater need of water, it takes this water from any possible source, including your skin cells. A single night of heavy drinking, especially in a smoke-filled bar or pub, can leave you rocking brand-new wrinkles during your hangover. Reducing your sodium and alcohol intake and focusing on greater water consumption may plump out these wrinkles without even requiring you to change out your facial wash.

Stress and lack of sleep can also be contributors to wrinkles. These can usually be resolved by switching to a silk pillowcase to eliminate the red, puffy, pillow-lined face that greets you in the morning or by engaging in mindful meditation to lower your heart rate. Taking anti-inflammatory supplements, from Vitamin C to turmeric, can also have some anti-aging effects.

           Begin a Skin Care Regimen

If you're like many, your skin care routine hasn't changed much since your teen years. Giving your face a good splash of water (or even a full wash) at night or in the morning may be as far as you go when it comes to caring for your skin, and you may choose your facial products based on what's on sale, not what's best for your skin.

Because of this, a change in your skincare routine may make wrinkles more noticeable. If you've gone from an oil-based makeup remover to a drying astringent, you may note new wrinkles under and around your eyes. Although the cellular structure of your skin likely hasn't changed, the amount of surface water your skin cells are holding likely has, reducing the pillowy appearance of fully-hydrated skin cells.

Choosing facial cleansers and moisturizers that are targeted toward your specific skin type and skin issues can go a long way toward reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. If you begin to notice irritation, you should discontinue your use of a skin product, but in all other cases, trying a few before making a selection may help you choose the one best suited to your unique skin.

           Contact a Dermatologist

If taking these preliminary measures hasn't done much to eliminate the appearance of these wrinkles and lines, it may be time to contact a
